Digging a Grave for the Fireflies
Iâ??m on the way to the movies with Rob, better known as the â??Soulless Wonderâ? to those of you that have heard me speak of him before. Grave for the Fireflies blares on the stereo pushing my lame factory issue car speakers to their absolute limit as we scream through Hollywood traffic making heads turn as people wonder why the sounds of hard core punk are coming from my white soccer mom mobile. Weâ??re in the middle of my favorite tune from GFFTF, Bite Marks, when Rob suddenly turns of the music and says, â??Iâ??m sick of this shitâ?. I am completely taken aback, not only did he kills the music, but you should never fuck with the tunes of the person in the caption seat! Thatâ??s just rude! Still Iâ??m curious as to what could have cause this reaction, before I could even ask what his problem was he burst into a tirade about how there is no evolution to music anymore, that artists are just puking up the same styles over and over again. In the middle of this fit he points to Punk as being the worse of all genres where this is considered. In the same breath he accuses people of my age of co-opting his youth, that people his age invented Punk and weâ??re just jumping on the bandwagon and should invent our own styles. At this point I am no longer listening to Rob and his venom and have turned the music back on to continue our journey.

Later on in the evening I relay this story to GFTFF lead singer Jordan, when I gave him the run down on Robâ??s action tonight he just laughs. â??Yeah the older people may have invented Punk, but as long as kids are angry about something punk will never die.â? â??Youâ??re defiantly right there,â? I agreed hell if his generation had done a better job of getting cleaning this country up, we wouldnâ??t have as much to be pissed off about. but I digress. Fresh from a brief stint on the Warped Tour, GFTFF is ready to do a lot more touring and a new prospective on the LA/OC scene. â??In a lot of ways the scene sucks.â? He laughed, â??maybe because we have so much to do here kids have more options than going to shows every night and most clubs will book and â??pop punkâ? power band before a hardcore band cause thatâ??s the in sound right now. But in some ways that doesnâ??t matter, cause there are still kids out there that love hard core come to the shows and go off every time! So thatâ??s who you play for, besides itâ??s still nice to have a smaller underground scene still.â?
Going into their first tour GFTFF wad to deal with a shit load of challenges, they had to play without their drummer Danny and guitarist Ritchie while they were touring with their side project Cut Shallow picking up 2 temporary members. They got the guys to learn all the songs in about a week and ripped the crowd a new one. â??It was fun doing some dates on Warped, but it was kinda wired cause there werenâ??t a lot of hard core bands there, there were a few like us and Drop Kick Murphyâ??s but the head liners were bands like Hawthorne Heights and My Chemical Romance. Still Jordan and Annia had a good time milling around backstage they couldnâ??t notice the strange behavior of some of the other bands around them. â?? There was a huge tent back stage where all of the bands would go to eat lunch and stuff when we were there we saw the singer from MCR, having lunch in full stage make up and a bullet proof vest about 45 minutes after they have already left the stage. I was like dude youâ??re from some suburb in New Jersey I doubt your hood was that rough! You aint 50 Cent dude!â? still while people may take their on stage too seriously its cool to know they were nice to their fans.
Now getting ready for another set of shows throughout the LA area GFTFF still have a few challenges ahead of them. Their original drummer Danny has left the band to work with Cut Shallow full time, but Jordan and company have taken it all in stride recently adding David Hidaglo to the lineup. If his name sounds familiar it could be because David has an impressive resume that includes Suicidal Tendencies, an excellent addition to the line if GFTFF was able to kick ass before having David in the band is sure to add more energy to their already intense sound.
Jordan and company are also the ring leaders of The Guild of Thieves and Assins. A gang of friends from all over the country you can recognize members of the Guild by the Fleur de Leaf on their bodies and gear. They also are the driving force behind the Dead Kids, which is sort of like their fan club. â??Weâ??ve always liked they way The Misfits had their Fiend Clubâ? Jordan said. â?? So we have the Dead Kidsâ?
The coolest things about GFTFF is that theyâ??re a bunch of kids who just want to have fun â?? We donâ??t consider ourselves artists or anythingâ? Jordan laughs â?? we do this cause its fun, I mean just sitting here and talking about all thatâ??s gone one in the last few months is just amazing to usâ? and they are an amazing group of people. Anyone who can record, layout and press their first cd in just over a month is pretty fucking awesome in my opinion. Just remember the new disc Bitten hits shelves on October 25 and is available through their web site http://graveforthefireflies.com/. For those of you who cant wait for shipping you can always pick it up at Hot Topic. The Dead Kids will be working hard for you all over the city so get off yer assess and get to a fuckin show!
